Morbark Quick Switch Morbark Wood Hog Grinder owners now have the opportunity to diversify their product offering without having to purchase a second machine. The Morbark Quick Switch Conversion kit allows you to make mulch and switch to producing chips or sawdust in a matter of hours, with no special tools. There are two Quick Switch kit configurations: 12-knife option for making standard size chips and 16-knife option for making sawdust. The 12-knife option is available on Morbark horizontal grinders, models 2600, 3800, 4600, 4600XL and 6600. The 16-knife option is currently available on the 3800 and 4600XL, with more models to follow in the near future.

Morbark Quick Switch Sawdust Analysis Results 1. Material was processed to test the quality of chips for use as fuel to be co-fired with coal and as input material for the production of fuel pellets for wood stoves. The trials took place in southern Ohio in February 2010 with temperatures in the mid-30's Fahrenheit. Input material consisted of various fresh-cut, whole hardwood trees. A Morbark 4600XL Wood Hog, equipped with a 1050 horsepower CAT diesel engine, and a 16-knife Morbark Quick Switch Conversion Kit produced approximately 40 tons/hour of fine chips. 2. A sample of the material was taken from the demo site and dried at room temperature, undisturbed, on a flat surface until bone dry. 3. The dried material was taken to the Materials Lab at Saginaw Valley State University and screened through a stack of brass sieves with openings of 1/2", 3/8", 1/4" and a #6 screen with an opening of 0.132". The material remaining on top of each screen was weighed and bagged producing the results below. What is the max diameter log I can chip? The 3800 can chip a 16” to 18” diameter log, the 4600XL up to a 22” diameter log, and the 6600 up to a 26” diameter log. You should not chip over the specified diameter. What is the size of chips that are produced by the Quick Switch? There are many variables involved including the type of wood that is being chipped, knife condition, drum speed and feed rate. With the 12-knife option the 3800 generally makes a 5/8” chip and the 4600XL makes a ¾” chip. There is some room for controlling and reducing the chip size by adjusting feed rates and drum speed. With the16-knife option a sawdust product is obtained from both grinder models. Can I get a smaller chip by using the grates also? Yes, it will also help with getting a more consistent chip with less overs. Can I remove the grates altogether? This is not recommended. Will I need to change the program mode in the Morbark Integrated Control System? Yes, there is (1) mode using the unit as a chipper with the Quick Switch conversion kit installed and (5) modes for grinding with the hammer mill in its original configuration.
